Hey all heres some information in regards to the coming patch update from CCS 1.0.1 to CCS 1.0.2:

First I did send out a notice we'd do the change over in the early AM Tuesday morning, this did not occur because I decided to hold back the current release version for a few more days of internal testing. On Sunday after Melanie and I finished up the final bug fixes I felt confident that we had addressed all the issues with the meter as they turned up in the April 1.0.1 release, but, we also did 90 days of internal testing on the 1.0.1 release and the six or seven bugs in the meter that are there at the moment slipped through...so I'm not going to trust my judgment and just release 1.0.2 without a few days of final acid testing with the internal testing group to be sure.

Heres whats fixed:

  • Meter targeting menu will no longer cause a stack heap collision error when targeting characters with names longer than 25 characters
  • Meter GM menu will no longer become unresponsive if you click Ignore on the target menu
  • CAPTCHA system reworked for additional security: We had to split the CAPTCHA messages, the answer is no longer in the dialog as that is easily captured by custom viewers and auto-answered. The CAPTCHA answer will be sent via OwnerSay(this is a chat box message), you will have to catch it there then answer the dialog.
  • CAPTCHA system challenges are now still randomized but will no longer occasionally CAPTCHA challenge users 3 - 4 times in an hour.
  • CAPTCHA system dialog no longer times out before the correct answer is given, causing a false failed challenge responce.
  • CAPTCHA dialog will now execute failed challenged response at 10 minutes as stated rather than 5 minutes.
  • All /9 commands removed from system communications, all legacy /666 commands have been removed as well. (I have re-enabled support for /9 offense/support/healing at user request. They're not exploitable so, we'll let them ride.)
  • Meter now reports non-combative/combative status in open chat whether used via menu or HUD.
  • Skills can no longer be sent multiple times before the cool down timer engages.
  • "Button mashing" hotkey skills multiple times in two to three seconds will no longer cause the meter to error (Too many http requests too fast).
  • All exploitable commands allowing the meter to be quickly reset quietly, fast enough that the display does not register the reset, but renders the target partially invulnerable, have been removed. Meters can now only be reset by GM command or full detach/reattach of the meter itself.
  • All exploitable commands allowing a meter to confuse the CAPTCHA system have been removed from the system.
  • Caster range increased back to 30m, new targeting allows for dynamic communication usage based on the range of the skill as it is set.

Largely I think its pretty solid and was very happy with my personal testing on Sunday, but I'm going to give it a few days on testing group's anvil to see if they can find anything we missed.

Whats coming WITH the 1.0.2 Patch Release:

  •  There will be a global OPTIONAL respec issued with this release. It will be the final free respec given until the next major system change.

Whats NOT coming with the 1.0.2 Patch Release:

  • XP Transfer System: This web feature is planned for future implementation AFTER the 1.0.2 patch release, exact dates on when this will be finalized are not known.
  • Respec on Demand System: This web feature is planned for future implementation AFTER the 1.0.2 patch release, exact dates on when this will be finalized are not known.

Hopefully that answers the questions and makes things clear for everyone in regards to what we've got coming and what still on the fire, in regards to development.

Thanks all, for your patience and your support,

Suzanna

For those of you that have mothers... PDF Print E-mail

Holiday Reminder:

Tomorrow in the US and many other countries in the world we celebrate Mothers Day.

My mother has always been a central part of my life and we're getting ready to pack her up and move her back to Denver where she's just picked up a really great job with Level 3. So given that shes moving here soon and this will be the last Mothers Day shes here in the same city with me, I'm spending most of the weekend helping her pack and doing stuff with her.

Cause its Mothers Day.

So if you have a mother, and 9 out of 10 of you probably do, don't forget to at least give her a call tomorrow if that's the best you can do.

Some CCS Related Information:

Melanie and I have been pouring over the reported and known issues with the 1.0.1 system. Unfortunately end of the month came up and Melanie had several contracts to finalize in her real life work and the bugs I've fixed isn't the complete list, so over the next week or so as Melanie's RL schedule clears up we'll be focusing on the last few that need a couple of heads looking at the same problems from different angles and getting the 1.0.1 patch release done which will address the six or so identified issues with the release.

Some confusion in regards to the Coming Soon™ web feature updates we'll be adding. The largest amount of confusion being "when its coming" it seems. These web feature updates are planned for development after we finalize the 1.0.1 patch update, this means sometime between now and July. Not, immediately following the release of 1.0.1 these things will be available. Now to more specific confusions.

Secure XP Transfer System:

  • You can only transfer the data of one character you own to another character you own, the system itself will ID the computer making the transfer, if the computer that initiates the transfer is not the same as the computer that authorizes it....it will not work. You cannot use this system to give your XP to other players.
  • The character data for Character A overwrites the data for Character B, you cannot use this system to combine the XP of two characters.
  • Once Character A is transferred to Character B, Character A is deleted permanently, it cannot be recovered, Character B then is marked as "record transferred" in the database and is ineligible to use the transfer system again for 180 days.

Simple facts are there is a lot of confusion on what this system is, its not a way to combine all your characters together to instantly get level 70, its a simple escape hatch that allows people who have ended up in a bad situation or just want to start over as a new character the ability to retain their data. Nothing more, nothing less.

Also, let me print this out in all capital letters so people will stop IMing me about it and dropping me notecards:

AT NO TIME, UNTIL THE SECURE XP TRANSFER SYSTEM IS IN PLACE WILL I, OR ANY OTHER SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR BE DOING MANUAL XP TRANSFERS ON REQUEST. THERE IS A SINGLE 1% OCCURRENCE WHERE I WILL DO THIS AND THAT 1% OCCURRENCE CONSISTS OF THE TWO FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  • YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN HACKED AND YOU HAVE VALID PDF FORMATTED TICKET DIALOGS WITH LINDEN LABS ON THIS ISSUE AND LINDEN LABS STATES THE AVATAR IS UNRECOVERABLE.
  • A CCS ADMINISTRATIVE FIGURE MISTAKENLY REVEALS PERSONAL INFORMATION OR DATA ABOUT YOUR REAL LIFE THAT HAS CAUSED YOU TO BE PUT IN A SITUATION HAVING YOUR PRIVACY VIOLATED - PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT XP TRANSFERS IN THIS CASE DO NOT ALWAYS MEAN THAT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION AND ITS DISCLOSURE WILL NOT FOLLOW YOU TO YOUR NEXT CHARACTER.

QUITE SIMPLY, STOP SENDING ME REQUESTS FOR XP TRANSFERS -NOW-, ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, I'M NOT GOING TO DO IT UNLESS YOU SOMEHOW FALL INTO THE 1% SCENARIOS LISTED ABOVE. AND BOTH SCENARIOS REQUIRE DOCUMENTATION AND PROOF BEYOND YOUR "WORD". I REALIZE QUITE WELL THAT SOME PEOPLE AT TIMES GET INVOLVED IN RELATIONSHIPS AND THEN REALIZE THEY DON'T LIKE THE PERSON THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH ANY MORE BUT DON'T WANT TO LOSE THEIR CCS LEVELS TO GET AWAY FROM THE PROBLEMS THEY MAY HAVE WITH THAT PERSON, BUT CCS IS CCS, YOUR PERSONAL SECOND LIFE ISSUES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM AND UNTIL THE SECURE XP TRANSFER SYSTEM IS AVAILABLE, NO ONE IS GETTING TRANSFERS ON REQUEST, SO STOP ASKING...SERIOUSLY...I MEAN IT.

 Respec on Demand:

We've always been pretty open with RP based respecs but sometimes people just don't want to put in the effort, so there is a system being added that will assess a percentile based XP "charge" for initiating a respec on your own with no RP required. The percentage has not been set in stone at this time, it will not be a heavy percentage, but the percentage will increase with each time you use the system. This is to give people the ability to change their CCS direction on their own terms, RP or not, but to ensure that the system eventually penalizes those that use it too much by reducing the total amount of XP they have.

Role Play based respecs will still be available even once this web feature goes into the player profile.

Special Racial Titles:

A year and a half ago Melanie gave someone she found amusing the "Nekopire" racial special title and from there its pretty much spiraled out of control into everyone thats been in CCS for more than 72 hours thinking they're special and deserve a custom title. There were a few people that definitively deserved such considerations due to their contributions to the ever growing community in the CCS network or their own clans, which are important parts of the CCS Community, just as CCS sim communities are.

But over the last year and half, as I said, its simply become silly.  We decided at the last development meeting to discontinue the issuance of special racial titles as some kind of preferential recognition because we believe that people should be special through their deeds and actions and role play quality, not because of some little bit of text over their heads and there are a lot of people in CCS right now that do special things every day and help tons of people ever day that don't have, nor need, a special racial title to do so.

Unfortunately some of the global GMs did not get the memo sent out via group notice and reissued a few special titles on request. So as of the 1.0.1 patch release I will be removing all special titles from the database entirely so they cannot be added even if someone has the access to do so.

I know this seems mean, but its rather silly, in all truth, that anyone needs to "define" who they are in a special way via the meter hovertext. You role play who you are, if you're a neko vampire angel demon (though really, I'd hope someone would realize how silly that is), then you need to be role playing that, not lobbying for a NekoVampireAngelDemon special title.

If all else fails you do have a title field you control, completely to yourself, and you can set whatever title there you want. But far as the system issued special titles, they're being removed, don't advertise that you're special, show people you're special. That says a lot more than a custom title ever will.

Anyways just some news and updates, we'll let you all know when we're ready to roll on the 1.0.1 patch release and YES THERE WILL BE ANOTHER RESPEC ISSUED WHEN WE ISSUE THE PATCH RELEASE AND IT WILL BE THE FINAL FREE RESPEC UNTIL THE NEXT MAJOR SYSTEM UPDATE.

Thanks all and have a great weekend and don't forget to call your mother!

Second Life Services April 28/29 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Hey all just as a heads up the while the Second Life Grid Status page has been of course, less than explanatory but has at least courteously informed us of that "Second Life is Down Yo" I have called and gotten some further information as to what went down last night around 8:45pm PST.

Effectively around that time, the entire Second Life Phoenix co-location facility went down due to power outage. (How this co-location facility did not have a UPS back up system is not explained), this entire co-location branch going offline dropped a large amount of servers and put huge loads on Second Life's authentication, asset and resource servers, forcing Linden Labs to take emergency measures to prevent corruption and data loss resulting in the entire grid being taken down as an emergency maintenance measure.

The grid is "up", partially, at the moment but still closed due to a massive amount of regions being down or unavailable due to being primarily directed to load to Phoenix co-location servers.

So theres some information that you may, or may not have had up to this point. They are not sure when the grid will be coming up but expect it will be open to logins at some point between now and 10am PST perhaps earlier.
